| projects & activities South Asia Children’s Fund Scholarships for Local Heroes On a selective basis, the South Asia Children’s Fund provides full scholarships for young people from profoundly disadvantaged backgrounds who have demonstrated exceptional academic potential, and who have a record of service to their community. At present eight students in Nepal are receiving support for their tuition, accommodation, transport and all school materials. Among the youth receiving scholarships from the South Asia Children’s Fund is Ms. Ang Dawa Sherpa, who stood among the top students in her district. She is keenly interested in science and dreams of becoming a nurse or doctor. Her father looks after a small village monastery, and her younger brother is a monk. Ang Dawa is active in her school’s Eco-Club, and organized tree planting and pollution control campaigns in her community. Ms. Phul Kumari Choudhari from Shree Jagadamba Secondary School in Bardiya district of Nepal wants to be a nurse and to bring basic medical care people in remote communities. Her father is employed as a daily wage labourer, and her mother raises goats and chickens. Phul Kumari helped organize an HIV/AIDS awareness program, and an eye care camp in her community. On account of her abilities and record of service the Tharu Community Development Forum strongly recommended Phul Kumari for assistance from the South Asia Children’s Fund. Ms Bal Kumari Choudhari of Bardiya district in Nepal was the first prize winner at the Shree Jagadamba Secondary School Public Speaking Contest, and volunteered for three years with the local chapter of the Nepal Red Cross Society. Her community was hard hit by eleven years of armed conflict, and both her parents are profoundly poor. Bal Kumari is a strong student who dreams of becoming a nurse and helping her community. The Tharu Community Development Forum highly recommended Bal Kumari for a scholarship from the South Asia Children’s Fund. |
